4 signs of tree roots in your drain pipe

Suspect you have tree roots in a drain pipe? Learn the top signs, like slow drains and gurgling, so you can spot this common plumbing problem.

You’ve got a drain that keeps backing up, or maybe you hear a gurgling sound from the toilet when you run the shower.

You start to wonder, “How the heck do I know if this is a simple clog or something more serious, like tree roots in the drain pipe?”

The truth is, they’re both kinda right. It often starts as a simple clog, but the cause might be roots.

Roots don’t punch through solid pipe. They’re drawn to the moisture and nutrients escaping from a tiny, existing crack or a loose pipe joint.

Once they find that opening, they grow inside and expand, eventually creating a serious blockage.

This is especially common in older homes in places like Coral Gables or Miami Beach with their original pipe joints, but it can happen in newer construction, too.

Here are the signs to look for, from most to least obvious.

1. A sinkhole or soggy patch in your yard

This is one of the most reliable signs.

If the sewer line running from your house to the street is leaking because of a root-damaged joint, the water has to go somewhere. It saturates the soil around the pipe.

You might notice a soft, mushy spot in your lawn that seems to stay wet, or even a small depression or sinkhole forming. You may also see one patch of grass that’s suspiciously green and lush compared to the rest of your yard.

It’s getting extra water and fertilizer, straight from your sewer line.

2. Slow drains and gurgling throughout the house

A single slow drain, like in a bathroom sink, is usually just a local clog of hair and soap.

But when your shower is slow, your toilet gurgles, and your kitchen sink takes forever to drain, that can point to a blockage further down the system in your main sewer line.

All your home’s drains lead to this single pipe. When it’s partially blocked by roots, the wastewater backs up and affects multiple fixtures at once.

3. Frequent clogs, especially in the lowest drains

Do you have a toilet or floor drain in the lowest part of your house that seems to back up again and again?

That’s another common sign.

As roots begin to fill the line, they catch toilet paper and solid waste. This creates recurring blockages that a simple plunging or snaking won’t permanently solve.

4. Foul smells from your drains or yard

Your plumbing system is supposed to keep sewer gas out of your home and yard.

If you start smelling sewage, that usually means something is wrong. The odor could come from your drains as they struggle to clear, or you might notice it outside, near the compromised section of pipe.

How to confirm it’s roots

These signs are strong clues, but the only way to know for sure what’s happening inside your pipes is to look. A professional sewer camera inspection is the definitive way to diagnose the problem.

Here’s how it works.

We feed a small, high-resolution camera into your sewer line through an access point called a cleanout. I can see the condition of your pipe in real time on a monitor.

We can spot roots, see exactly where they’re getting in, and determine the extent of the damage.

This tells us whether you just need a thorough cleaning or if the pipe needs repair.

If you suspect roots are your problem, a camera inspection is the right first step. Our drain cleaning & drain repair team handles exactly this kind of diagnosis.

What happens if you ignore the problem?

Waiting until you have a full-blown sewage backup is a mistake. It is a huge missed opportunity to catch the problem early.

According to the EPA, root intrusion is one of the most destructive things that can happen to a wastewater system.

The roots will continue to grow. They’ll expand inside the pipe and widen the crack they entered.

Eventually, this can cause the pipe to collapse, turning a drain cleaning job into a major excavation and replacement.

What to do if you suspect roots

If you’re noticing any of these signs, don’t wait for it to get worse.

The problem won’t go away on its own.
